Huge Increase in Prison Legal High Emergencies

New reports have stated that an ambulance is called to a UK jail every 40 minutes due to the abuse of alleged legal highs. Despite the Government ban, the epidemic of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) has seen paramedics responding to a record number of emergency calls from prisons. Using the most comprehensive Drugs of Abuse (DoA) test menu available, Randox Toxicology can test multiple drugs including the primary prison drugs Spice and Black Mamba, from a single sample.
Heightened concerns have been expressed in relation to the persistent Spice problem both inside and outside of prisons. Figures released show that death rates in prisons are at their highest since 1978, with 89 prisoners in the UK believed to have died due to drugs as of April 2017. A related incident at HMP Forest Bank saw chief inspector of prisons, Peter Clarke, reveal that these drugs were “easily available” and sparking violence. This comes after a previous announcement from Secretary Liz Truss calling for a nationwide programme of “pioneering new tests” for legal highs in prisons, which the Evidence MultiSTAT analyser provides in under 20 minutes. With online screening suitable for non-laboratory settings and non-laboratory staff the Evidence MultiSTAT analyser provides staff with “more powers to stem the flow of these appalling new drugs.”

At Randox Toxicology our level of expertise in toxicology research and development allows us to adapt quickly to ever changing market influences and develop assays for current and emerging drug trends, as seen in our latest New Psychoactive Substance panels.
