Drugs affecting the central nervous system have the potential to impair driving ability and according to the National Roadside Survey 20 percent of drivers tested positive for at least one drug in 2014 with 15 percent of these drivers testing positive for at least one illegal drug.

Oral fluid is emerging as an alternative to blood due to the ease of collection and the ability to non-invasively obtain a sample. Also, the proximate to the time of driving and the prospect of having preliminary on-site test results available to law enforcement for probable cause or evaluation purposes.
