Mining industry facing the same challenge as communities in dealing with drugs and alcohol

A survey of drug and alcohol testing on mine sites has found that mining companies are under increasing pressure to manage the impact of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.

Employer group Australian Mines and Metals Association (AMMA) found the results were a reflection of higher levels of drug use in the wider community and greater acceptance of the use of illicit and prescription drugs.

The use of amphetamines has exploded across Australia, especially in rural communities, where it is estimated that usage is double the levels of metropolitan areas.

The survey also found that out of the 53 companies canvassed, more than 60 per cent did not test for so-called ‘designer drugs’ as their chemical make-up is constantly changing to beat standard drug tests.

Randox Toxicology offer the Evidence MultiSTAT, an effective solution for workplace drug testing in the mining industry. This on-site, benchtop analyser has the ability to screen up to 21 drugs of abuse including classical, synthetic and prescription drugs, in under 20 minutes. No laboratory or laboratory experience is required.
