World Cup 2018 – Drug Facts – 12 Argentina
For the first time since 2010, Argentina’s government has released the national drug consumption data. The report by the Argentine anti-narcotic sectariat’s drug observatory was presented by President Mauricio Macri on June 29th 2018. The report was based on data from more than 20,000 12 to 65 year olds. The report shows that the number of marijuana users grew by 150% (from 590,000 in 2010 to 1.5 million in 2017). The amount of cocaine users has doubled from 150,000 to 300,000 in 2017.
The data also shows a rising trend in drug use for young people between age 12 and 17. Since 2010 the percentage of this groups marijuana users more than doubled to 2.7%, while cocaine and ecstasy users tripled to 1.2% and 0.3% respectively. In all, drug consumption by youths has increased by 146% since 2010.
The report suggests that drugs are easily obtained in Argentina. More than a third of those surveyed aged 12 to 49 said they could easily buy cocaine in less than 24 hours, while this percentage surpassed 50% for those under 35 buying marijuana.
